IPTV on Android TV: installation and setup
Android TV and Google TV are found in televisions from several manufacturers and in stand-alone media boxes. The steps are much the same everywhere. What matters is telling apart the settings on the device and the things that come from your provider.
Device settings or provider details?
This is the most common source of confusion, so let us deal with it first.
| Settings on the device | Details from the provider |
|---|---|
| Network and Wi-Fi | Which app to use |
| System updates | Your account details |
| Storage space | How the app should be configured |
| Date, time and language | What applies to your subscription |
You can always sort out the left-hand column yourself. You should never have to guess the right-hand one.
Step 1: Check the system
Go to Settings → System → About. You will see the model and Android version. Choose System update and install whatever is waiting. On Google TV, the settings are behind the cog or your profile picture at the top right.
Step 2: Check the network
Under Settings → Network & Internet you can see whether the device is connected and how strong the signal is. If the device has a network port, a cable gives the steadiest picture.
Step 3: Free up space
Media boxes and sticks often have limited storage. Under Settings → Apps you can uninstall what you do not use. Too little space makes apps install slowly or crash.
Step 4: Install the app from Google Play
- Open the Google Play Store on the TV.
- Search for the name of the app – your provider gives you that.
- Choose Install, then Open.
If the app does not appear in the store, it has probably not been adapted for TV or is not available in your region. Ask your provider before trying other routes.
Step 5: Sign in and test
Enter the details exactly as you received them and let a broadcast run for a few minutes. Stuttering? The guide Troubleshooting buffering takes it from there.
Common problems
- The app will not start: update the system and restart the device.
- Sign-in fails: check upper and lower case, and stray spaces.
- The picture stutters: try a cable, or move the device closer to the router.
